hijabs

There are numerous misconceptions about Muslim Women of all ages who don the hijab: that we’re oppressed, compelled to address our hair by male kin; that we’re submissive, and incapable of getting “integrated” into daily life in the western environment. These misconceptions are perpetuated everywhere: from content in newspapers condemning Girls for masking their hair or faces (or for carrying different types of swimwear), into the one-dimensional depictions of Muslim Girls on Tv set.

Muslim Girls are not a monolith, there isn’t one way to for us to get, and we certainly don’t embody the stereotypes that happen to be foisted on us. In the past couple of years, I’ve been heartened to see hijabs Muslim Girls having Charge of our have narratives and remaining seen in the public eye. Youthful hijab-carrying Women of all ages can activate the TV and see Fatima Manji covering the information on Channel four, or Nadiya Hussain presenting a show within the BBC.
